MUMBAI: Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is an annual festival observed on the 14th of April to commemorate the memory of B. R. Ambedkar by all Indians. Maharashtrians also celebrate it as Knowledge Day in his memory. He was the first minister of Justice and law of Independent India and was the principal architect of the Constitution of India, a founding father of the Republic of India, an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement, campaigned against social discrimination against Untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labourers.
This year the students and staff of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Mankhurd celebrated the 127th birthday of Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar on the 16th of April, Monday at 11 o’clock in the morning. A short prayer service was held and everyone from the institute paid homage to his statue with a garland of flowers and a tilaka. Thereafter, the Chief Guest Mr. Bhavani was invited to give a short speech along with Mr.Ghate, the principal of ITI. The event was attended by 90 students of ITI and 10 staff from the Children’s Aid Society, Mumbai. All the students were given a book called “Lokrajya” meaning Democracy. The book outlined the entire life of Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar and speaks volumes of his contributions to the Republic of India. The event ended at the reflections of the works of Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar.
